"Think of a game of tug
of war.....between two sides...of EQUAL STRENGTH...where
the two teams are actually TRYING......to keep the
rag which is tied to the rope.......over the same
piece of ground.......the STEADIER the BETTER.......in
this game it is the rag which is IMPORTANT...it has
a purpose which the two sides don't always remember...
the sides CONTROL the POSITION
of the rag...and sometimes everyone forgets that the
RAG and the PLAYERS are all part of the same TEAM......and
if the two sides PULL.... with the SAME STRENGTH.....then
the RAG sits over the PRECISE area which the TEAM
wishes... It can be an EASY game to play when all
the players realise they're on the SAME SIDE".
Eds note. Thanks Ben!
Hi Nathan - yes it probably
could do with a bit of an explanation - I designed
it specifically for a person who had a tremor in their
hands which they were unable to control (consciously
anyway). The metaphor works on the assumption that
the tremor is caused by unequal contractions from
the antagonistic muscles within the hand, as such
the two 'teams' refer to the groups of muscles, trying
to keep the object of their efforts - the 'rag' (actually
the hands) in a position which is deemed best by the
whole 'team' (ie the whole person).
The metaphor assumes also that
people know how the tug of war game is played! - with
a rag tied over the middle of the rope, to be used
as an indicator of which team is winning. Hope this
is better suited. Thanks again!
