Maybe The Horse Might Sing!
During the time of the Roman
Emperor 'Caligula'.... a certain Roman Senator was
sentenced to death by Caligula. The Emperor offered
the Senator a choice.... between a simple "painless"
death that very day........or a short term reprieve
with a caveat......which was.... that the Senator
had six months in which to teach Caligula's favourite
horse to sing.
After six months if the horse
did not sing to the Emperor's satisfaction, then the
Senator would be put to death in the slowest and most
painful way Caligula's executioners could conceive.
The statement "Make him feel
he is dying" really applied in Caligula's day.
Surprisingly.... to the Senator's
friends.... the Senator chose the latter choice.
One of his friends asked him
why he had made a choice which was without doubt....
going to result in the Senator dying in a horribly
painful fashion.
The Senator replied that: "In
the next six months, maybe I might die, maybe Caligula
might die.... and maybe the horse might sing."
