When I think of change and how unsettling it sometimes can be, I often think of the humble caterpillar. There it is, eating its way through life. A simple little being. Nothing much going for it, not much for it to do except eat.

It doesn't choose a mate, doesn't raise young. It just eats. Nobody takes any notice of it.

'And then it sleeps'. Makes itself a cosy cocoon, it's safe and it sleeps. Who knows what this little caterpillar 'thinks about while it’s sleeping'.

Hasn't had much excitement in its life to dwell upon. Maybe it 'thinks about changing'. Maybe it just 'allows itself to change'. Maybe it doesn’t 'think' too 'deeply' about changing. Maybe it just 'changes naturally and instinctively'.

And then when I 'think about that change taking place', I am always 'amazed at how different the being is' that emerges from the chrysalis. 'So entirely different'. Simply by 'allowing nature to take its course', our humble little caterpillar.....who never went anywhere, who never did anything except eat ....suddenly and 'easily becomes' this beautiful entity. 'Wonderful' colours and markings that make it unique.

And this fragile-seeming butterfly 'does amazing things'. It can fly thousands of miles. Sometimes over wide and raging seas. It procreates to ensure the survival of the species. It's a source of beauty. It has songs and stories composed about it. Everyone notices it. Some 'find peace' in simply watching the fanning of its wings. Some find fascination in the patterns of its wings.

'A truly worth-while and courageous being'. Amazing what change can bring about, don't you think?

Ed's note: Thanks Sue!
