Once I had a client who was claiming to have no
faith, and to be feeling so much anxiety and doubt
that she thought hypnosis and therapy was really a
waste of time.
It didn't take great perceptual skills to notice
that she also had a cold. I began talking to her about
her cold, asking her how many times she had thought
she would die from this cold: "None!"
"Of course not...you have had many colds and have
taken for granted that your immune system can handle
them. Think about that. You have so much faith in
this inner intelligence to protect you and heal you...so
much faith that you never give it a second thought...even
to the point of forgetting to value it!" (She is now
focused on me, and her level of anxiety is noticeably
diminished.)
"And by the way... how often do you go to bed worrying
about waking up in the morning to find that the cells
of your body have migrated to different parts of the
room?" (chuckles, what a silly thought...she's relaxing
more and more as she makes friends again with this
part of herself she had forgotten.)
"Or, how often do you worry that you'll wake up
and not remember who you are, or what your problems
are!...now wouldn't that be nice.." (laughs)
"You see this mysterious power and intelligence
that as you...think about it now...you realize you
can never comprehend it with your conscious mind...but
isn't it nice to know that it is inseparably a part
of you...it is you.. so completely that you can take
it for granted... and forget it's there.... to the
point that your conscious mind can complain about
lack of faith.... and doubting....... and totally
miss the fact that this greater mind... is happily
giving the conscious mind..... the very life and energy
it needs to protest...just like a perfectly loving
mother holding a crying, unhappy baby in her arms."
(She is now deeply relaxed into trance.)
