The Facts!

In a classic hypnotic experiment, conducted by the British psychiatrist, J. A. Hadfield, three male volunteers had their hand-grip strength measured, by squeezing a 'dynamometer', a simple device that measures any force applied to it. The volunteers first squeezed this device whilst being in the 'normal' conscious state, and their average grip-strength measured approx.' 100 Ib.

Hypnotic trance was then induced, and suggestions given that their grip strength become weaker..... they were then measured again, and their grip was found to be only 29 Ib, over two thirds weaker than before!. Suggestions were then given that their strength increase, and their grip again measured, this time their grip strength had increased to 142 Ib.... an increase in strength of almost 50% !
